My inspiration for this article comes from a beautiful little soul. Thank you “K” for believing in the benefits of massage and most of all believing in YOURSELF!
ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, impacts 3-5% of school age children. Traditional therapies include medication which can have side effects like loss of appetite, sleep problems, and mood swings. These side effects impact a child’s ability to participate in class and other activities. Often a child will be labeled because of ADHD and may fall through the cracks at school because educators don’t have the tools they need to work with a child with ADHD.
Massage Therapy can help children with ADHD to get a good nights sleep, reduce mood swings, and increase appetite as well as help them to become more focused at school and during other activities. By stimulating the nervous system through gentle massage strokes to the extremeties and back as well as gentle holds of the head and neck the body learns to relax and beome calm. A trained Massage Therapist can help a child to become grounded as well as show parents how they can provide the same techniques at home.
My personal experience with “K” showed amazing results during and after our first session. Because he is only 7 years old his Mom was present through the 30 minute session and she was able to see the techniques used to calm her child. We watched as her child completely relaxed within minutes and the energy releases began. It was a truly beautiful experience. They have incorporated these techniques into thier daily routine. The beauty of this experience was that it was the child’s idea to get a massage. He told his Mom “I think this will help me”. I am truly taken by this and have decided to further my education in Pediatric Massage as a result.
Childhood is a time to have fun and enjoy every moment. If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD give massage a try to see if it is a healthy alternative to dangerous medications.
Have a beautiful day! ~Pamela
