Have you ever taken a moment to notice the difference between noise and sound? They both involve hearing and listening, but the effects of each are very different.
Noise drowns out sound and creates a state of chaos. It speeds us up and robs us of our awareness. Noise has become a part of our daily lives. Things like cars, sirens, machines, loud voices, and alarms create noise. Noise surrounds us everyday and we become immune to it’s effects.
Sound is a beautiful experience. It creates a sense of calm and allows the mind and body to slow down. Sound raises our self awareness. The sound of birds, crickets, the ocean, the breeze, and leaves stirring bring us back to nature and create balance. Sound can be a elody or song that brings you back to a good memory. Sound is part of our spirituality.
I live in a small city filled with noise. I escape each year to the beauty of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula where sound is what fills the air. This year I discovered that sound is my balance. Sound is what reminds me to breathe and enjoy the moment. It’s difficult to return to the noise of the city but each time I bring back a part of my trip ad allow it to keep me grounded.
